Gay Pride March Planned
Countdown to the 1982 Ohio Gay Pride Parade has begun and the excitement is growing!
For the past months Stonewall's officers have been busy meeting and communicating with every major community in and around Ohio, and the results are astounding. The parade will have contingents from not only Ohio based cities, but also Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, Blomington, and Philadelphia.
Cincinnati will be well represented at the parade with groups like Greater Cincinnati Gay Coalition, MCC of Cincinnati, Integrity, The Yellow Page, and the Political Action League showing strong support. Each of these groups is taking an active role in publicizing the parade and arranging transportation. John Zeh of "Gaydreams" on WAIF is dedicating several segments of his program to the parade and its significance for Ohio.
Cleveland is also planning to send a large contingent to the parade. The major groups supporting the parade and disseminating information are GEAR, AllPeoples Congress, Case Western Reserve Gay Student Union, Cleveland NOW, and Cleveland Gay Youth Group.
In Akron, Metroplex has strongly supported the parade. The Homosexual Unity Group (HUG) has also expressed support and is helping to spread the word.
Perhaps the most important aspect of the 1982 Ohio Gay Pride Parade is the statement it will make to the public. In that light, five principles for the parade have been carefully prepared.
PRINCIPLES OF UNITY
1. We as American citizens demand full and equal protection for Lesbians and Gay Men under the laws of Ohio and the nation. We call for an end to all discrimination against Lesbians and Gay Men in employment, housing, education, the armed services, health care, legal services, and immigration.
2. Through our own experience we recognize the present trauma and lack of informa-tion

trauma and lack of information connected with emerging feelings of sexuality and we insist the right to a fair and unbiased education be guaranteed to all youth.
3. As Women and Men we stand affirmed in our support for the Equal Rights Amendment and we demand full ratification of the principles of equality in this amendment.
4. On this Gay Pride Weekend we stand in solidarity with the millions of Americans marching in cities from coast to coast. On this the thirteenth anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, millions of Gay and Lesbian Americans stand as one for Gay Rights, Gay Pride, and Gay Unity.
5. We, as a free people, proudly acknowledge our solidarity
with our brothers and sisters around the world suffering from all types of oppression. We
The New
raise our voices in unison to end all persecution imposed on minorities, the oppressed, the poverty stricken, and all peoples of the world.
The next one and one-half months are extremely crucial to the success of the parade. It is quite possible this could be the largest and most important Gay function ever held in Ohio. We can get involved, contribute our energies, and produce a Gay Pride Week that will make all of Ohio proud and strong. Or we can sit back, contribute nothing, and complain about the lack of spirit and unity in our state. As we have expressed before, we need you. We need your support, your dollars, but most of all we need your attendance at the parade. Please don't let your brothers and sisters down.
in 1979 a group of people formed a coalition and planned a
march and rally that turned into one of the proudest moments in Gay American History. This was the 1979 March on Washington. I was privileged enough to have attended that rally and I assure you there is no better feeling than seeing thousands of your brothers and sisters gathered together in a demonstration of Gay Pride. Don't miss the opportunity to experience this here. Join with the thousands of your brothers and sisters from around Ohio. Get involved and tell your friends. I guarantee it will be one of the most thrilling experiences of your life. It's up to you to change the apathy felt in Ohio and help make our community a strong and unified one.
In the spirit of Stonewall...

With the upcoming primary, we feel that the gay community should be informed of the candidates' political views on issues that affect the gay lifestyle. REPUBLICANS
Tom Van Meter, at 39, is one of the youngest candidates for Ohio Governor. He has risen from a modest background unlike many of his Republican competitors. As a combat infantry officer, he has gained a broad scope of experience. He is opposed to the ERA

but has proposed legislation which would provide equal pay for equal work. No specific information on gay rights was available from this individual. He is an aggressive straight-talking politician, with strong grassroots support.
Taft is running on his much established name and family tradition in politics. He may be under the impression that the Ohio voters are obligated to vote for a Taft. He refused comment on any of the issues raised.
C. Brown and Teater were both unavailable for comment. DEMOCRATS
Dick Celeste, the leading candidate in the polls, represents a solid political background. The former lieutenant governor in 1974 actively seeks more citizen participation in government. An advocate of Gay Rights, Celeste has on staff a representative to actively secure gay voter support. Jerry Springer, a lawyer from Cincinnati, is also one of the youngest gubernatoria! candidates. Springer holds a compassionate view of working people. He is an out-spoken supporter of human rights and has petitioned actively for an end to discrimination based on sexual orientation.
For more political information, please see the other articles in this issue, or contact the candidates directly.
NOTE: Pictures of the other candidates were unavailable at press time.
